Repair of expansion joints at sewage treatment plants

Wastewater treatment facilities were built in the 60-70s of the last century. Expansion joints are gradually destroyed when exposed to aggressive media (chemical, biological). There is a threat of fecal runoff breakout and environmental pollution. To repair the expansion joints between concrete cards and slabs, it is necessary to use sealants to fill the joints.

Procedure of works execution

As a seam aggregate, we propose to use Abris S-DB sealant, which has increased elongation at break (330%) and frost resistance.

To protect the outer part of the seam from mechanical damage (garbage, etc.), a harder material Abris S-DB (trapezium section) is laid.

For installation of Abris S-DB sealant propane torch or electrophene, roll anti-adhesion film is used.

Material Requirement
Sealant used for repair and reconstruction of concrete structures shall not flow out and extrude from the seam (vertical seam) during the operational period of the structure, but shall:

  • have mobility at process temperatures and differences;
  • be water-resistant, frost-resistant and durable;
  • have a high long-term adhesion strength to the concrete surface in the seam;
  • be crack-resistant in the cold;
  • maintain strength and continuity at all design deformations of the seam and all loads and impacts acting on it;
  • be convenient in repair works;
  • be resistant to aggressive environments.

Stages of work

Repair of expansion joints at sewage treatment plants

1. Clean the seam from the old filling to a depth of 70 mm, at 100% of the old filling being unusable to a hard base.

2. If necessary, clean the end faces of the concrete slabs to a healthy concrete.

3. If necessary, dry the edges of the seams with a torch.

  1. Perform seam priming.

  1. Warm the profile with a burner (soft flame).
  2. Seam the profile.

Technology Benefits

  • Structure resistance to medium and high water pressure.
  • Easy to use.
  • Stable waterproofing of structures to external factors.
  • Durability.
  • Low installation cost.
  • Possibility to perform works under conditions of negative temperatures.
  • Ductility is maintained at negative temperatures.
  • The shape is preserved when in the sun (does not flow).
